The Education Assistant will support teachers with various classroom duties, including supervising students and helping them learn concepts and skills across a wide range of subjects. The incumbent will work in diverse settings, such as one-on-one with students or within larger group sessions to ensure productive learning.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

Main Responsibilities

  • Reinforce the learning of students in small groups or with individuals throughout the lesson.
  • Prepare relevant course materials such as supplies, equipment or handouts for the use of students or other staff throughout the lesson.
  • Support the development of student Individual Education Plans (IEPs) for the use and review of the Developmental Service Worker.
  • Implement strategies to accommodate individual student learning styles to ensure quality learning.
  • Support the development of the Educational Assistant Program through the informal assessment of activities.
  • Monitor, assess, and re-evaluate learning strategies to the educational team.
  • Support the observation and assessment of students for any knowledge growth or delays.
  • Observe and document student strengths, needs, gaps, and achievements to support their ongoing learning and development.
  • Assist with crisis problems and behaviour management of students who may be disrupting the learning of others.
  • Support the development and maintenance of student records, grades, and attendance.
  • Identify concerning student incidents and escalate the situation to the teacher.
  • Support the inclusion of students who experience behavioural, social, and / or emotional issues.
  • Supervise and monitor the safe learning of students throughout lessons.
  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, recesses, or lunch as required to ensure a safe and positive environment.
  • Contribute to maintaining student files and documenting observed behaviours and support plans.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • Broad knowledge of child development and best practices for learning.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience and empathy with all students.
  • Strong advocate for youth who may be unable to for their own wellbeing.
  • Ability to relate to youth of multiple ages and support their growth and development.
  • Ability to uphold confidentiality requirements related to student information

Experience:

  • Experience and knowledge of trauma informed educational techniques and practices.
  • Experience working with youth in a school is an asset.
  • Experience working in a First Nation environment is an asset.
Education:
  • Completion of a high school diploma is required.
  • Completion of an Early Childhood Education program or diploma or an equivalent teaching certificate is preferred.
  • First Aid Certification is an asset.

  • Ability to successfully and periodically undergo an appropriate criminal and vulnerable sector check is required.
